In order for eligible professionals to receive government EMR incentive payments, they must demonstrate “meaningful use” of an accredited EMR system. These regulations are designed to encourage widespread adoption of EMR technology and integration of these capabilities into the health care system.

Meaningful use stage 1 and stage 2 criteria and regulations have been established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC). Healthpoint created this infographic (below) to assist health care providers in understanding the differences in core objectives, clinical quality measures, and menu measures between meaningful use stage 1 and 2.
