Changes at Washoe Co. jail aim to help inmates battling mental illness, opioid addiction
RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — Sheriff Chuck Allen gathered people from across the community on Friday to discuss ways to improve the processes at the Washoe County jail.
The sheriff brought in an independent auditor to the jail to figure out how to combat issues like opioid addiction and mental illness among the inmates behind bars there.
“Fights are up,” Sheriff Allen said. “Our attacks on deputies are clearly up and it’s disturbing, you know? And you can’t fix this stuff overnight.”
The sheriff said the culture at the jail is much different than it was 20 years ago. He said deputies are booking more and more inmates who have mental illness.
