Close to 1,000 people, mostly high school students, gathered at Father Ryan High School to participate in a student-led Relay For Life race supporting the American Cancer Society.
The event is the largest student-led Relay for Life in the nation, according to the school.
While Father Ryan students led the event, students from several schools in Davidson and Williamson counties participated. Each school team is represented by individuals who take turns walking the track from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., a lengthy time frame meant to represent the long hours of treatment cancer victims often incur.
“We walk all day to symbolize that we are walking with cancer patients and caregivers and their families and friends,” said Michelle Mast, a U.S. History teacher and student activity coordinator at Father Ryan.
