Arizona Health-e Connection (AzHeC) is a Regional Extension Center (REC) that assists physicians in Arizona with the adoption of health information technology (HIT). This Regional Extension Center was created under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act’s Health Information Technology Extension Program. Specifically, Arizona Health-e Connection Regional Extension Center educates and provides physicians in Arizona with the technical assistance to improve their quality of care through the implementation of electronic health record (EHR) systems.
For a physician, purchasing suitable EHR software is difficult and time-consuming, but purchasing certified EHR software is the first step toward achieving meaningful use of EHR systems. Arizona’s Regional Extension Center can guide physicians through the vast amount of EHR vendors and EHR software available and choose the one that is most suitable to the practice. This Regional Extension Center is also supportive of the long-term goal to develop Health Information Exchanges.
Some Regional Extension Centers offer a list of prequalified EHR vendors (also known as preferred EHR vendors) that have been selected from a group of EMR (electronic medical record) companies. These EMR companies qualified as a preferred EHR vendor through their commitment to the health information technology mission and their commitment to offer physicians more meaningful use of EHR software through a higher base level of functionality. Additionally, the preferred electronic health records vendors may create quick and smooth adoption for Regional Extension Center participants by offering group discounts, discounted prices, and standardized terms and conditions.
