Breach Description
The data breach at the Administrative Fund of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, Inc., Police Department of New York (NYCDEA) was reported on October 31, 2022, after the organization confirmed that an unauthorized party had gained access to its email system. This breach compromised sensitive member information, affecting an estimated 21,544 individuals. The types of data exposed in the breach included names and addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license or state identification card numbers, financial account numbers, username and password information, payment card information, medical history, and health insurance information. The breach was initially detected on December 16, 2021, when suspicious activity was observed in the organization’s email system. Following this detection, the NYCDEA took steps to secure its email environment and engaged outside experts to investigate the incident. The investigation, which concluded on October 3, 2022, confirmed unauthorized access to files containing sensitive member information. In response, the Administrative Fund of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, Inc. reviewed the affected files to determine the scope of the compromised information and subsequently sent out data breach letters to all impacted individuals, advising them on how to protect themselves from potential identity theft and other frauds. The NYCDEA is a labor union representing over 20,000 active and retired members of the New York City Police Department, employing more than 25 people and generating approximately $11 million in annual revenue[1].
