Breach Description
Bi-Bett Corporation, an addiction treatment center located in Walnut Creek, California, experienced a data breach that was first identified on February 17, 2023, when suspicious activity was detected within an employee’s email account. The company took immediate action to secure the account and initiated an investigation with the assistance of outside cybersecurity specialists. The investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party had gained access to the email account, which contained sensitive patient information.
The compromised information included patients’ first and last names, addresses, Social Security Numbers, driver’s license numbers, Medicaid numbers, and medical reference numbers. After a thorough review of the compromised files to determine the extent of the breach and the individuals affected, Bi-Bett completed this process on May 22, 2023.
On June 13, 2023, Bi-Bett Corporation sent out data breach notification letters to the affected individuals, informing them of the breach and the specific information about them that was compromised. The breach notification letters were part of the company’s efforts to comply with legal requirements and to help the affected individuals understand the risks and take appropriate steps to protect themselves from potential identity theft and fraud.
Bi-Bett Corporation serves residents of Alameda, Solano, and Contra Costa Counties, offering a range of therapeutic options including inpatient residential treatment, outpatient treatment, DUI programs, inpatient perinatal treatment, and inpatient detox treatment, as well as sober living facilities. The company employs more than 106 people and generates approximately $6 million in annual revenue[1][5].
The breach at Bi-Bett Corporation is particularly concerning given the sensitive nature of the information stored by healthcare providers, which makes them a common target for hackers. Patients affected by such breaches are at a significantly increased risk of identity theft and other forms of fraud[1].
