Breach Description
Fellowship Village, an elderly services care provider based in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, experienced a significant data breach that was first detected on or around August 9, 2023. The breach was officially reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights on October 8, 2023, after unauthorized access to the company’s computer network was discovered. This unauthorized access allowed an unknown party to access and potentially exfiltrate sensitive consumer information between July 27, 2023, and August 9, 2023[1][4].
The compromised data includes a wide range of personal and sensitive information such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, patient identification numbers, medical record numbers, medical and treatment information, health insurance information, financial account information, and dates of birth[1][4]. Fellowship Village has begun the process of notifying individuals whose information was affected by the breach and has offered guidance on how to protect themselves from potential fraud or identity theft[1].
Fellowship Village provides a variety of services to its residents, including independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and senior rehabilitation. It employs more than 401 people and generates approximately $105 million in annual revenue[1]. The breach at Fellowship Village is part of a larger trend of cyberattacks targeting healthcare and senior living providers, highlighting the vulnerability of these sectors to such security incidents[2].
In response to the breach, Fellowship Village has taken steps to secure its network, including notifying federal law enforcement and conducting a thorough investigation to understand the scope of the breach and to prevent future incidents. The company has also posted a “Security Notice” on its website to inform affected individuals and the public about the breach and the measures being taken in response[1].
