Breach Description

In July 2022, Hudson Regional Hospital in Secaucus, New Jersey, became the center of a significant security breach when a large cache of weapons was discovered on its premises. This incident led to the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) imposing a $63,000 fine on the hospital. The discovery was made during a police investigation into a bomb threat at the hospital on July 18, which later turned out to be a hoax. During a safety sweep, law enforcement officers found an unlocked closet within an office that contained 11 handguns of various calibers and 27 rifles and shotguns, including a Kriss Vector .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine, which was determined to be an assault rifle.

The weapons were brought into the hospital by Reuven Alonalayoff, the hospital’s marketing director at the time, who was later arrested and charged with possession of an assault firearm and two counts of possession of a high-capacity magazine

Despite initially being charged, most of the gun charges against Alonalayoff were eventually dropped, and he entered a pre-trial intervention program

The NJDOH’s fine was based on multiple violations, including the hospital’s failure to report the bomb threat and the discovery of the weapons cache within the required three-hour window, as well as failing to maintain a violence prevention plan and implement policies and procedures to maintain a safe hospital environment
