Breach Description
The breach at Mariner Management Group in Ohio was a significant data security incident that occurred on September 9, 2023. Mariner Management Group detected unusual activity on its network, which led to an investigation revealing unauthorized access to sensitive personal information. Although there were no reports of fraudulent misuse of the information at the time of the notification, the breach raised concerns about the potential exposure of individuals’ personal data.
In response to the incident, Mariner Management Group took several steps to address the breach and mitigate future risks. These measures included engaging a specialized cybersecurity firm to conduct a forensic investigation, enforcing an organization-wide password change, strengthening password requirements, implementing new technical safeguards, and enhancing overall security measures. The company also provided affected individuals with access to Single Bureau Credit Monitoring/Single Bureau Credit Report/Single Bureau Credit Score services at no charge for twelve months to help protect against potential misuse of their information.
The forensic investigation, completed on November 7, 2023, found evidence that some files had been accessed by an unauthorized actor. Based on the preliminary results of the investigation, Mariner Management Group reviewed the impacted server to identify potentially affected individuals and finalized its notice population on November 4, 2023. The company then took steps to notify all individuals on the impacted servers about the breach and the measures being taken in response.
Mariner Management Group expressed regret for any concern or inconvenience caused by the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the privacy and security of all personal information under its control. The company encouraged affected individuals to take additional steps to protect their information, such as obtaining free credit reports, contacting financial institutions and credit bureaus, and enrolling in the offered credit monitoring services before the enrollment deadline of February 15, 2024[1].
