Breach Description

Stanley Street Treatment and Resources, Inc. (SSTAR), a healthcare provider based in Fall River, Massachusetts, experienced a significant data breach that was reported on November 11, 2022. The breach, which occurred on October 14, 2021, was discovered by SSTAR on September 26, 2022. An unauthorized party gained access to SSTAR’s computer system and acquired sensitive files containing personal information of patients and employees[1][3][5][7][9][11][15].

The compromised information included first and last names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, state identification numbers, financial account information, protected health information, dates of service, medical diagnosis and conditions information, medical treatment and medications information, and health insurance information[1][3][7][9]. The breach affected 45,785 individuals[1][3][7][9][11].

In response to the breach, SSTAR alerted law enforcement and began working with a third-party data security firm to investigate the incident. The organization reviewed the affected files to determine the extent of the compromised information and sent out data breach letters to all affected parties, informing them of the incident and advising them on how to protect themselves from potential identity theft and other frauds[1][3][7][9].

SSTAR also posted a “Notice of Data Security Incident” on its website and provided identity theft protection services to the affected individuals. The company has taken steps to enhance the security of its systems to prevent future breaches[1][3][7][9][15].

The breach at SSTAR was one of several healthcare data breaches reported in Massachusetts in 2022, highlighting the ongoing threat to sensitive patient information within the healthcare industry[11].
