WellMed Medical Management, a healthcare delivery company based in San Antonio, Texas, experienced a data breach where a former physician obtained patient records with the intention of soliciting those individuals for his new clinic. The records were accessed between February 6, 2022, and May 17, 2022, and included demographic information, health insurance details, and medical information such as medical record numbers, providers, diagnoses, treatments, medications, and laboratory results. No financial information, Social Security numbers, or driver’s license numbers were involved in the breach.

WellMed took steps to prevent any further outreach to the affected patients and notified the appropriate authorities about the HIPAA violation. The company also confirmed that the records taken by the physician have been recovered. In response to the incident, WellMed reinforced its existing policies and practices and implemented additional safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future[1][3][5].
