The Massachusetts eHealth Institute (MeHI) is a Regional Extension Center created under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act’s Health Information Technology Extension Program. It aids physicians in Massachusetts with the adoption of health information technology (HIT). Specifically, the purpose of this Regional Extension Center is to provide physicians with the assistance and education needed to improve their quality of health care through exceeding meaningful use of electronic health record (EHR) systems.
The purchase of certified EHR software is a daunting first step needed to start achieving meaningful use health information technology. The vast amount of vendors and the complexity of software choices available make choosing a suitable EHR software difficult for physicians. Massachusetts eHealth Institute Regional Extension Center can play a necessary role in guiding physicians through the process of selecting and implementing EHR software. This Regional Extension Center is also dedicated to the long-term goal of supporting Health Information Exchanges development.
Some Regional Extension Centers recommend preferred EHR vendors, which is a prequalified list of EHR vendors that have been selected from a group of EMR (electronic medical record) companies. These selected EHR vendors have shown a commitment to the health information technology mission and they offer greater software functionality that enables practices to achieve meaningful use of EMR and best participation in the Health Information Exchange. Additionally, these EHR vendors offer discounted prices and standardized terms and conditions, facilitating quick and smooth adoption of EHR software for these Regional Extension Center participants.
