SERIOUS PROBLEMS HERE!! I was admitted with an unknown illness which I thought was food poisoning as I was throwing up uncontrollably but after taking a gastric juice and throwing that up too, I was diagnosed with severe gastroenteritis. I will start off with the pros since I myself am a nurse aide and nurse in training and I am able to recognize some good things. PROS: The staff was very kind and got me in very quickly due to the severity of my disease and that it was 2 in the morning in the ER. I also received quick care. Now for the cons..... I had many problems here. CONS: I was admitted and informed the nurse that I had been throwing up uncontrollably for about 4 hours. I had also been having diarrhea since I got to the hospital and again once in the room. Also, that I had not consumed any water. First: they put me in the kids wing which I understand they may have been low on space but was not very comforting as I felt out of sorts. Second: ALL THEY GAVE ME WAS A CUP OF WATER AND ADVIL. I told they how severe of pain I was in and the intense burning of my stomach they had me pop a couple pill. I threw up the first round then I held the second round down. THEN THEY RELEASED ME!! Half way down the hallway my blood pressure drop from such a severe level of dehydration that my BP was 60/40 and falling and I was tachycardic. I collapsed in the hallway and ONLY THEN DID THEY EVEN THINK TO GIVE ME AN IV WITH ELECTROLYTES!!! Third: I wasn't able to give my insurance so I got billed a ridiculous amount of money once I was better. Then after submitting my insurance they billed me more than before since their discounts for people without insurances was better than me even having insurance. So much is wrong here.... they need to get it together.

It is much more to patient care then plaques on a wall or certain accolades. I just left Duke's emergency room after sitting for almost an hour in a room. No nurse or physician came into the room to assess my mother or provide an update. I inquired with the receptionist about the wait and she stated that no physician had picked up my mom's case yet. I proceeded back to my mother's exam room and waited an additional 10 to 15 mins. The entire time we waited, all that was heard were comments about ordering food as well as the daily gossip of the hospital. I proceeded back to the desk and was able to speak with the charge nurse who basically stated what do you want me to do,there were 4 patients ahead of your mom. It was at that time that I decided that I could not deal with the arrogance of Duke. If a charge nurse can speak to a patient's family member with no regard to professionalism or concern for proper patient care, then my mother was definitely in the wrong place. I now see why many take the drive to go to UNC.

I've taken my young son to the ER a couple of times in the middle of the night for some high fevers he had. My child told me, "I like that hospital. They're really nice and they actually help you." Out of the mouths of babes.

$3,000 just for ER check in. $300, for 2 IV bags if salt water and a poorly placed needle. $7,000for a scan and waiting on a stretcher in the hallway for six hours and no results, just discharged and clueless, condescending doctor. Mercilessly billed for shoddy service. Never again!
