- Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA): A thin needle draws cells from a lump or mass
- Exfoliative Cytology: Cells that have shed are collected (Pap test, urine sample)
- Fluid Analysis: Body fluids like pleural fluid are examined for abnormal cells
Important Limitation
Because cytopathology looks at individual cells without their surrounding tissue structure, it generally cannot determine if a cancer is invasive or provide information about margins. If a cytology result is positive or suspicious for cancer, it is often followed by a surgical biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.
