I was taken to UNM ER after an accident about a month ago. A lady ran a red light off the I-40 Frontage Rd & 6th Street and totaled our car. They have a lot of fast drivers, drunk drivers and inattentive drivers here in ABQ so be careful. Thats another story. Google stats on drivers and fatalities in ABQ and while you are there google ABQ cart thefts.
Positives:
I was pretty shook after the accident and although nothing was broken they did a total evaluation on me.
The ER was really B.U.S.Y.!.. being Memorial Day weekend...but despite this they were very attentive.
Besides some random trails of blood on the floor from some other patient(which was quickly cleaned up)the place was clean and organized. For example visitors are escorted from the waiting lounge by a hospital employee every 15 minutes.
They answered call lights promptly.
There was a TV in the room.
They monitored my vitals the whole time I was there. The downside is that you are tethered to the medical bedside monitor and they want you to stay put...for as long as it takes to get to see a doctor.
Each Medical professional explained thoroughly what they were going to do before they did it.
I was grateful for their high level of care and expertise especially for an ER.
I did have to wait about 6 hours to see a Doctor get some XRays and be formally released after a total of 7 hours so I was pretty hungry. The restaurant had closed. All I had was a smoothie for breakfast as we were on our way to lunch before the accident. Luckily I had a really good nurse and PA. They brought me food which was really nice of them and honestly it wasn't too bad. A turkey sandwich, some coleslaw, baked chips, fruit and cookies.
The negatives beside the long wait which is not unusual for a busy ER:
I do remember being so cold in my little room in the Triage. Not a good thing if you are already shaking with teeth chattering and chills from shock and aching all over from a MVC. I wanted to sit up in the bed but it kept falling down to where I would be laying flat again in a matter of minutes. The cervical collar was very uncomfortable in a laying down position especially when your neck hurts.
I cant say I want to ever see the inside of an ER again but everyone was very professional, friendly and I felt I was in good hands.
UPDATE: I had to downgrade the stars to a 4. I have been waiting for my itemized final bill since last May. They lost the check the insurance company sent directly to them although it was cashed by them. So unfortunately my bill still reflects the higher amount without the insurance payment subtracted. I spoke with the same girl in billing about a dozen times. She still doesn't understand or perhaps she is unable to follow through to send me the much needed itemized bill minus the payment.
in addition, I was planning to go through their system to see a surgeon but they had me on the phone for about an hour and a half sending me to different departments that didn't know whether or not I needed XRays first or needed to have a referral. I would say please dont waste too much time going here unless you have to. There are other hospitals and clinic systems in ABQ.

I love UNMH!. because everybody is so nice and really helpful here!. And the doctors and nurses are nice and really helpful also!. And wen your sick or even lost??. Or something?. and u come here they all really check you out and run all kinds of tests and everything!. And ya I know it is a very long wait in the ER but sometimes if u get lucky?. It don't take much long!. There is also an urgent care here too and I think they open from maybe 7am or 8am and they closed right on the dot! @ 6pm!. So be early!. and also if you are expecting you're little bundle of joy to come into the world?. Or maybe you just found out!. I would recommend UNMH to care for your baby and you! And it's on the 4th floor of the old part of the hospital!. And ask for a lady named Brittany Simpiaco!. Because she is awesome!. And she knows everything!. And she will take care of u and you're baby!. You will be in great hands and safe with her!!. I know because she took care of me and my 3 babies!!. Anyways when you're pregnant any of the ladies here also midwives really take good great care of you and you're little bundle of joy!. To come!.
