Stasis pigmentation is a brownish discoloration of the skin, often with swelling, that usually appears around the ankles. It results from blood cells breaking down and leaking out of tiny blood vessels. Typically, stasis pigmentation occurs in people who have had varicose veins or other vein problems for many years.
