I’ve been to this hospital plenty of times. Both of my children were born there and both experiences were fine. However, I’ve been to the hospital twice (technically three, I’ll explain) for personal reasons. Both times I was experiencing extreme kidney stone pain. Both times I could barely walk or do anything while they were passing and I stay at home with 2 young children during the day (one having special needs) so I cannot lay around in pain all day because they have needs. Both time is got bad enough that my wife left work to rush me to the ER despite my resistance. The first visit went fine. I told them about the pain, they ran a scan and gave me an IV for pain. Followed up with the urologist as directed and got pain medicine to finish passing the stone from the doctors assistant or a secondary doctor (was a female doctor). Eventually passed the awful stone and all was fine. Months later I experience the same horrible pain. I told them it was my lower back and that I’d been there for kidney stones before. They ran another scan which came back showing I had a stone passing. For some reason they decided it necessary to scan my testicles for like 25 mins which I consented to but didn’t want. They never mentioned the results. I get the paperwork for the urologist and some pain meds after being there for 3-4 hours? Almost nobody else was in the ER that day. Annoying but fine. I go to the urologist a day or so later and he tells me I can either get surgery or he won’t do anything for me (unlike the other doctor who gave me the option to pass it with medication) and told me it WASNT passing, even though I was told it was the day before, he’d run no additional scans, taken no samples, nothing at all. Was basically just trying to bully me into getting this surgery. So I went home with nothing and was in horrible pain when the meds ran out days later. This forced my wife to drag me back to the ER in hopes that the urologist made a mistake and that the hospital would recognize it and help me.

That’s when things got much worse and I’m still extremely upset and embarrassed about this. When we came in, we saw the same woman at the front who obviously could tell that I was in horrific pain again. To our surprise, she asks us if, “we’re sure we want to be readmitted?” We said yes because we had no choice other than leaving me in that condition to somehow take care of my kids when I’m nearly unable to stand up and move around. We waited and were directed to a small room without a door and a big curtain unlike the rooms I’d been in any other time I’d been there. The nurse that came in happened to know my wife. She even mentioned that many of the people who get surgery from the urologist I went to, ended up back in the ER bc of complications! I wasn’t surprised since the doctors entire demeanor was unprofessional and really seems like he was telling me to sign up for surgery or f*ck off. A nurse came in to take my blood pressure and had a cup to take a urine sample but didn’t do either. Just sat them on the table next to me and left. Then the doctor entered the room. From the moment he walked in he had an awkward smile on his face and was oddly condescending towards me almost like i had done something wrong. He asked me the same questions as a the others had before, and without taking my blood pressure, urine sample, etc, he continues to tell me I don’t have a stone passing. This man decides to take it upon himself to diagnose me, without administering any tests and ignoring the scans and papers I had just got days before at the same hospital. He tells me that it’s not kidney pain that I knew for a fact I was experiencing, but instead simply stomach pains from smoking marijuana. This might be an important time to note I’m black and have dreadlocks. Me and my wife were stunned that he would be so blatantly disrespectful and completely ignored the fact that the X-ray tech did see a stone passing. There was also a cyst that came back from the testi scan that they didn’t mention to me. About 3 days later I passed the stone with no meds

Avoid if you can! I went to the Emergency Room at Mercy and received completely inadequate treatment. They never sent a Doctor to evaluate me, only a Physicians Assistant who "assessed" me for 40 seconds before leaving. He never took my vitals, asked me any questions about why I was there...nothing at all! I was there for 4 hours and spoke to the Physicians Assistant for maybe 3 minutes total between my "assessment" and my results. Also, when I asked questions about my results absolutely no information was given. It was a horrible experience, and I would recommend going elsewhere if you can...especially when your health is on the line!
