Unfortunately our experience was a nightmare. Their intentions were good but the fact that they refused to believe the patient and parent led to an emergency room visit followed by a five day stay in the hospital treatment for an eating disorder that didn't exist. They used a parents fear to get me to agree to the hospital. The patient had no symptoms of an eating disorder, her lab work was normal, but she had a low heart rate (which had already been checked by cardiology back in August).
She also is extremely athletic and they refused to consider that the rate could be normal. We didn't even know we were going to be treated for an eating disorder until we were in the hospital room and they started telling us all the "rules" we had to follow. I was so confused I thought we were there to watch a heart, but they decided it had to be an eating disorder because it was their specialty.
I protested the whole time but they just changed the terms from; "eating disorder", to "malnutrition", to "energy imbalance". Five days of bed rest, restricted food, restricted water, and it was't until I complained loud enough and demanded a cardiologist, before they actually talked to the patient.
I would never ever recommend this place as they feel they know best, they can't be wrong, and don't listen. They treated us like prisoners and liars and wouldn't and even stated that cardiology was wrong, when we were there to look and watch the patients heart. They seem to know more about the heart than cardiology? They had NO evidence to support their diagnosis and every time they tried to give one we could explain it but they just dismissed us because they felt we were not telling the truth. The damage this has done to the patient is long lasting and devastating.
