Excellent staff. Cardiology department excellent. Nurses were wonderful and efficient. Doctors and Nurses very attentive and skilled. The rooms are small and there is very little space for family. The Fisher House is available for family living 50 miles or further. The rooms were not as clean as should be (i.e. corners. Daily mopping etc.)
I've been regularly going to the John Cochran VA med center for 10 years. It's a no frills hospital, and takes a while to learn how to navigate the system. However, I've always received top notch care there. Most of the doctors and nurses really care about the vets they are serving.
The parking can be somewhat of a hassle, as they have limited space. They do offer valet parking which is sufficient, but be prepared to wait a while for your car during busy hours.
There is a free parking lot across Grand, but is usually full by about 9 am. You will have to cross 2 streets to walk from the lot to the hospital. Parking on the street is also available, but it does cost. The street parking is owned by St Louis city, and the meters take cash and plastic.
The desk staff are generally friendly, although they wear a 'gruff' exterior. Usually a friendly "Good Morning" will bring out a smile.
Some advice: Show up early and plan plenty of time after your appointment to get your car (if you valeted). Keep in mind that this isn't a luxury hospital, it's government funded.
An Emergency Room visit on a Saturday. The ER Doctor was amazing. The Nephrologist from Barnes Barnes Hospital stepped in and made it all better. The Patient Advocate Offices need to be Advocates for the Veterans and not a PR extension for the Administration.
I have received only the most professional and compassionate care from the VA. My recent surgery and hospitalization at John Cochran far exceeded my expectations in every respect.
I thank and am grateful to Dr. Bishnu Devkota who discovered my abdominal aortic aneurysm and Dr. Emad Zachary who repaired it. Kudos also to the surgery and ICU teams who assisted.
Terrible hospitality. Grandpa is here for cancer and no one seems to give one sentimental feeling. I'll never recommend this place. Update: it's been 2 hours and we're still waiting on service. Pathetic.
