There are some truly excellent people at the Fort Meade VAMC and the Rapid City CBOC. My primary care provider, the infectious disease specialist who saved my life, the ladies in the infusion clinic, and the PT person who worked with me after I became disabled.
There are also people at this VAMC who are not excellent:
The patient advocate with MBA in his signature block who told me I would receive a written response to my patient advocate complaint within 45 days. Knowing I needed that response for my Notice of Disagreement package for a denied 1151 claim. The patient advocate's response when I followed up with no letter at 60 days can only be described as patronizing. After 6 months with no letter received, his lack of response has paid off as I will be instructing my VSO to submit my package with no further documentation.
The doctor who was tasked to provide the written letter - apparently has made no effort to do so. When I am asked by the patient advocate if this doctor spoke to me in July when they have not, it calls into question what if anything has been done to address the complaint I sent to the patient advocate in May 2018. I believe there was a tasking to provide the letter but obviously at this point, again, the doctor tasked to do so has no intention of doing so.
The doctor who misdiagnosed me in the ER with anxiety when I had two bacterial infections which, had they been diagnosed promptly, would have given me multiple options for treatment. By the time I was seen by a specialist, both infections were too advanced for any treatment other than the antibiotic that has rendered me permanently disabled.
The two nurses in the ER who make inappropriate comments to patients who are in no position to defend themselves. Any response in kind to the comments would no doubt result in the patient's record being annotated that they are disgruntled or confrontational.
It is about as likely my 1151 claim will be approved on the 2nd time around as it is I will be able to shovel snow on my sidewalk this winter without falling down. And because no action has been taken through the patient advocate's office to address the misdiagnosis, inappropriate comments, lack of response, etc., none of those things at the Fort Meade VAMC will change either.
So, went to ER here this morning and was impressed. My best ER Experience since I was in Utah many years. Fast, efficient and a step above others VA experiences.
I have received excellent care at Fort Meade V.A.
Dr Weisensee and her assistant Lanie are the BEST! We always are treated like family and receive great care.
I am a Veteran that have to admit that VA Black Hills is truly a great hospital. Outstanding customer service and one of the few hospitals where everyone smiles and greets Veterans with kind words in the hallways.
