Breach Description

The Denver Public Schools (DPS) experienced a significant data breach affecting all district employees, as announced on March 3, 2023. This cybersecurity incident occurred between December 13, 2022, and January 13, 2023, during which an unauthorized actor accessed and/or took certain files stored on the district’s computer servers. The breach was discovered on January 4, 2023. The compromised data included sensitive personal information such as names and Social Security numbers of current and former participants in the district’s health plan, employee fingerprints, bank account numbers, student identification numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, and more. Despite the extensive nature of the breach, DPS officials stated there were no indications that the personal identifying information of students was accessed. DPS, Colorado’s largest school district, employs approximately 15,000 workers. In response to the breach, DPS has mailed letters to affected employees, opened a call center for inquiries, and is offering credit monitoring and identity theft protection services. The district has also implemented additional security measures and continues to provide data security training to its employees
