Breach Description
South Jersey Behavioral Health Resources, Inc. (SJBHR), located in Pennsauken, New Jersey, experienced a significant data breach that was first identified on April 5, 2023, when encrypted files were discovered on their computer systems[3][5][7][9][11][13]. An investigation, assisted by third-party forensic specialists, determined that there was unauthorized access to certain SJBHR servers starting on April 3, 2023[3][7][9][13].
The breach resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to a wide range of sensitive personal and health information. The types of data potentially compromised include consumers’ names, contact information, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, dates of birth, medical record numbers, treating/referring physicians, health insurance information, subscriber numbers, medical history information, and diagnosis/treatment information[3][5][9][11][13].
SJBHR began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who may have been impacted by the security incident[3]. The organization has not found evidence of unauthorized access or acquisition of personal data but is providing notification out of an abundance of caution[9]. They have also reported the incident to law enforcement and are taking steps to implement additional safeguards and review policies and procedures relating to data privacy and security[7][9].
SJBHR is a fully licensed non-profit behavioral health agency and an affiliate of Inperium, Inc. It provides a range of services including outpatient care, children’s outpatient care, homeless services, adult partial care services, and residential services[3][5]. The organization employs more than 153 people and generates approximately $15 million in annual revenue[3].
Individuals affected by the breach are encouraged to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud, to review account statements, explanation of benefit forms, and monitor free credit reports for suspicious activity and errors[9]. Additional information about the breach and steps individuals can take can be found on SJBHR’s website[1][9].
