Breach Description

Texas Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine (TOSM) experienced a security incident in which an unauthorized third party gained access to their systems between November 22, 2022, and November 29, 2022. The breach was discovered on November 28, 2022, and a subsequent investigation revealed that certain patient information was taken from their systems. On February 10, 2023, TOSM determined that the information related to certain patients was impacted. The types of patient information accessed included dates of birth, diagnosis information, disability information, driver’s license numbers, health insurance group/plan numbers, health insurance information, health insurance policy numbers, medical history information, medical record numbers, prescription information, subscriber numbers, and treating/referring physicians[1][3].

TOSM has stated that they are unaware of any actual or attempted misuse of the patient information as a result of this incident. They have taken steps to secure their environment by changing all system passwords and are notifying all applicable regulators, including the Department of Health and Human Services. TOSM is also offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services to impacted parties and encourages them to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud[1].

Patients affected by the breach are advised to review their account statements and monitor free credit reports. Additionally, they have the right to place an initial or extended fraud alert on their credit file at no cost. TOSM has provided contact information for credit reporting bureaus and the Federal Trade Commission for further guidance on protecting personal information[1].
